Proverbs 31:2 spoken love
What, O my son? And what, O son of my womb?
And what, O son of my vows? Proverbs 31:2
**Solomon’s mother draws her son’s attention in this first verse, skillfully catching his ear. She uses a leading question that really has no answer, but causes him to think.
She does this instead of saying, “sit down and be still and listen while I teachest thou the Bible.”
**She emphasizes from the beginning of this oracle his great importance to her. She had carried him inside her body and went through the pain of his deliverance-willingly.
**She also wanted him to know his life was the fruit of her union with David. She had vowed to David her love and faithfulness, and now she could express that love even more than before by raising their children in the fear of the LORD.
**It seems here that though she has children (Proverbs 31:28), this is one on one attention she is giving now.
**She puts her all into teaching him. She doesn’t give him leftovers or boring monotone. She is prepared and skillful, having taken time to think through what is most important for them to learn in this life and presenting it in an effective manner. This is better than a power point presentation to a board or committee, for it is motivated by love. And God honored her commitment to excellence by recording her words for eternity. He breathed them, and she kept them.
Lets be purposeful about the words we say to our sons throughout their days.
Here are some I like to use:
I love you.
You are wanted.
You are God’s special treasure.
You fill my life with joy.
You are so much like your father.
I love you always, forever, no matter what.
I sure love that Daddy.
What are words that you say each day?
Schedule outings or special times with each child. If you have many children like I do, this may seem impossible. But we have done it at times and it is worth it.
Ephesians 4:29 Let no unwholesome (lit. rotten) word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need (lit. of the need) of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Psalm 22:25 …I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.
